A farmer who apparently had a personal grievance with the law enforcement in his countryside community was arrested Thursday for crushing seven parked police vehicles with his tractor. The incident occurred while officers were inside the building, cooling off with the air-conditioning.
Parked police cars squashed
The best escape route after a crime is simply to smash all the police cars in your path. That was apparently 34 year old Roger Pion's plan as he crushed seven of the town's only 11 police cruisers with his red tractor as if in a monster truck rally. The cars were all outside of the Orleans County Sheriff's Department when the event occurred.
And it was no simple task. The cars were not lined up properly for his assault, so Pion initially used his tractor to line them up just so before driving over them. Twice.
Air conditioner covered sound
The police only discovered that the incident happened after getting a 911 call from a witness. The officers in the building had the air conditioners running and did not hear any of the stuff going on outside.
The Burlington Free Press spoke with Chief Deputy Philip Brooks. He said:
"We had nothing to pursue him with. It's more than half our fleet."
Brooks ended up having to borrow a car from a nearby service station to be able to try and pursue the topic.
Only got about a mile
Pion was apprehended at gunpoint about a mile down the road, but not without allegedly attempting to back over one of the automobiles that was going after him. Pion also had a loaded handgun on him at the time of the arrest.
Nobody was hurt in the incident, but police sources estimate the damage to the cars and the equipment inside them at about a quarter of a million dollars.
Sheriff Kirk Martin told the Associated Press:
"We're going to have to get the jaws of life up here to pry the trunks open and see about the rifles and shotguns. The radios are ruined."
Pion has been charged with unlawful mischief, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a crash. He has 14 counts that he is dealing with and a $50,000 bond to get out of jail.
A running complaint
Pion has issues with police force, according to CBS News. In fact, he got arrested for possessing marijuana and resisting arrest just last month.
Pion is scheduled to appear before a judge on the matter on Tues, August 7.
