Mitsubishi's 2012 i-MiEV electric is facing a small-scale recall in Canada that could spread.
Recalling the MiEV
Mitsubishi will be recalling some 2012 models in one of the only electric intelligent vehicle recall campaigns.
Only 49 of the four-seat EVs are targeted at this time. The issue in the recall is the deployment of the curtain and side impact airbags.
At this time, the recall effort is only taking place in Canada. However, according to AutoGuide, the effort is likely to later impact owners in the U.S.
Sensors not right
Some of the cars may have compatibility issues between the sensors and the self-diagnostic software used in its Safety Restraint System. The issue may cause the SRS warning light to illuminate during a diagnostic check.
If the vehicle is in motion while the lights is lit, Mitsubishi claims, the side impact airbags may not inflate, or the front airbag may inflate only after a delay, negating its usefulness. That, of course, could up the chance of injury, should a crash occur.
How to proceed for those who have one
Canada owners of the 2012 Mitsubishi are urged to contact their dealers about replacing the sensors with new ones that are compatible with the self-diagnostic software in the SRS. U.S. owners may wish to contact the automaker also, as a preemptive measure, should the recall cross the border.
Find out about MiEV
Between 2004 and 2006, the Mitsubishi was produced in Europe. It was initially shown off in 1998 at the Paris motor show. It was called the Smart Forfour back then as CEO of Swatch Watches, Nicolas Hayek, created it. It was created with Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler, which meant someone had to take it in 2005 when the automakers split. Daimler and Mitsubishi kept the Intelligent Forfour at that point.
its re-branded moniker, stands for Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle. It is the lowest-priced electric car on the market, with a sticker price of only $30,000. With federal incentives, according to Torque News, that price can drop to $21,650 or less.
Documentary film put together
On Wednesday, August 8, you can be ready to see a Discovery Channel documentary on the Mitsubishi history in the States. The same film will start in Canada on august 4.
