The 350 millionth Ford was built in Thailand

By Cornelius Nunev

In its previous 109 years, Ford has made an astonishing 350 million vehicles. That milestone was achieved with a Focus built in Thailand.

Apparently popular car

The Model T has been produced over 350 million times since 1903 when the automobile first started manufacturing. It only took 109 years to get there.

Ford sold 489,616 units of the Focus model in the first half of this year, beating out Toyota's 462,187 Carollas. That, according to IHS Automotive, made it the best-selling automobile globally in that same period of time.

There is another reason why the Focus is popular now though.

John Fleming, Ford executive vice president of global manufacturing, explained why the figure 350 million is so astounding:

"Producing 350 million vehicles is equivalent to producing one vehicle every 10 seconds for our 109-year history. If placed end to end, the vehicles would stretch to the moon and back -- twice."

Do not expect it to come from USA

The automaker did not build the Ford in Spokane, Washington. Even though Ford is known as an American car company, the Rayong, Thailand plant that opened in May built the 350 millionth Ford.

Plan to get more sales

Over 85 percent of Ford's automobiles will be on only nine unique platforms starting in 2013 as part of the One Ford plan that CEO Alan Mulally has put into place. He wants to increase sales and global production by standardizing everything.

The Focus is constructed Ford's major production regions throughout the world.

The plan will make it so 8 million vehicles could be created every year by 2015.

Fleming explained:

"Producing this vehicle in Thailand also is significant. It underscores the power of our One Ford plan to deliver profitable growth with great products built in ultra-flexible and efficient facilities everywhere around the world."

In every major market, the Ranger is available. It is a compact pickup associated with Mazda Motors that is constructed in Thailand.
