5 Safety Tips All Drivers Should Know

By Paige Thompson

Driving and carpooling is the transportation form of choice for over a hundred million Americans per day, according to the numbers.

That amounts to a lot of people on the road and the need to practice proper safety procedures at all times. Here are some tips to heed in your travels.

Always preserve the condition of your vehicle. Follow the recommended service intervals found in your vehicle owner's manual, always monitor hoses and belts, and check filters, spark plugs and fluids. Also, be sure tires are properly inflated and gas levels are sufficient.

Carry an emergency kit. In addition to standards such as a first aid kit and battery jumper cables, consider adding the Autolite TriGlo safety light to your vehicle emergency kit. This is such a nifty addition because it would serve the purposes of both a flashlight and a flare. The Triglo (tm) can also be used as a flashing safety triangle, but the two main uses are enough to warrant its presence in any emergency kit.

Always use seatbelts. Seatbelts, may they be lap or shoulder, are essential in avoiding all sorts of injuries to front seat passengers, so be sure to buckle up - one simple action could save your life and others'.

Know your route. That is, master your route before you even travel on it. Motor clubs such as AAA provide auto travelers with maps and detailed directions to their destinations. Since your trip can always be delayed by unexpected events like traffic, bad weather or construction, be aware of these potential events if announced and go on an alternative route.

Don't allow yourself to get distracted. Traffic, construction and careless drivers are distractions beyond your control. Therefore, the best way you can reduce distractions is to reduce those potential distractions inside the vehicle.

One good way to do this would be through the Autolite SpotGlo (tm) seatbelt light source, which eliminates the glare caused by overhead lights. This compact, battery-operated recessed light clips easily onto a passenger's seatbelt and slides smoothly on the strap for desired positioning. It diverts the glare caused by overhead lights with its own LED light source, reducing driver distraction.
