Pollution-Free Vehicles Would Certainly Make Life A Great Deal Better

By Jarad Gibbs

All this hocus-pocus about air pollution could be incomprehensible to an individual living in Montana. Yet when you live downtown and you can practically touch the air, never mind see it, and to breathe deeply can be a challenge, things are a little different. The majority of the world is packed with air pollution, and even areas that don't seem to have any, are getting it from the rest of the world.

Can you list all the things in the air that are harmful to people? Second-hand tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, ozone, nitrates... and then there's particulate matter. Particulate matter emanates from many sources, such as power generation, vehicle emissions, many forms of industrial pollution, and others. They also can be from volcano's, mold, forest fires, pollen's, and many other sources that make the environment quite dirty. These particles are varied with regard to size, their origin and their composition, although one of the most severe is vehicle emissions. Roadways crowded with vehicles are the reasons behind the deteriorating world-wide air pollution predicament, and of course the biggest cities are the worst culprits.

It's not possible to smell it, you can't see it, although if the air is polluted you'll find it present in large quantities - carbon monoxide. Cigarette smoking and gasoline-powered vehicles are definitely the principal sources. Because it reduces the amount of oxygen, it harms our bodies and can even kill it in the event that levels are high enough. Even small quantities of carbon monoxide absorbed via the body over an extended period of time can cause diseases of the respiratory tract. It's amazing just how many health problems world-wide develop from carbon monoxide. There are plenty of scientific studies showing how negative the effects are with air pollutants, especially from cars, but also factories.

It is evident from the studies that from one city to another the pollutants observed to be present and their effects are very different. A study over 5 years with 5,000 adult participants concluded that exposure to air pollutants a result of traffic contributed to a higher mortality rate. People living near to a busy road have a higher chance of dying from a cardiovascular disease, just like a heart attack. The degree of air pollution from the most polluted cities in the States will certainly cause the life expectancy of people living there to be shortened by between two and three years. The decision of researchers is that a cardiovascular event, resulting in death, will happen to people even if they only have short-term exposure to particle pollution at elevated levels.

In areas where the particle pollution is in increased concentrations, there tend to be more admissions to hospitals for various cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. You will probably live a few years less if you have been living in an area having an elevated level of particle pollution. Unless situations change, all these facts point to a rather unhealthy future for people in America. More effective regulation of the pollutants coming from vehicles is necessary if we want future generations to enjoy a healthier environment than us.
