Make Your Car a Safe Place To Be

By Judy Miller

People driving in cars expose themselves to danger in areas they may not have considered a risk. Accidents happen, sometimes in spite of careful and safe driving, but there are other hazards in cars that can hurt or even kill the driver and passengers.

Through laws and regulations, there are many ways to increase safety. These include:

Secure every passenger Drivers and their passengers must be secured in a seat belt before embarking on any journey.

Drive With Caution

Reduce the chance of an accident by taking control of your driving. Wheels spinning, skidding when cornering, driving too fast, not indicating or disobeying traffic laws are dangerous - to the driver and others.

Stay Focused Don't read, talk on the cellphone, shave, apply makeup or do anything that takes attention off the road.

Strap Your Child in a Car Seat

Properly secured safety seats and properly strapped in children help provide maximum security in a car.

Be prepared

A safety kit for the car should include a torch (with batteries checked regularly), all the tools needed to change a tire, reflective cones or triangles, jumper cables and a seat belt cutter. For small fires, a fire extinguisher may come in handy. When it is cold outside, it is important to have extra clothing items or blankets to keep you warm in case your car breaks down. Having a first aid kit in the car trunk is a smart move for any driver.

There are many rules of the road that can save lives whether they are well-known, or little hints or tips discovered along the way. Apply these tips the next time you drive:

Keep loose items to a minimum

Unsecured items pose as a deadly threat if a car has to make a necessary impetuous jerk, turn or stop. Unsecured items are responsible for endangering the lives of many passengers.

Power windows off

In 2004, eight children in the US choked themselves with power windows. This bizarre accident happens when the child is leaning out a window and inadvertently presses on the power window switch. Most cars have a 'parental control' lock-out switch which reverts window control to the driver. Use it - it will save fingers and hands too.

Never leave kids or keys - or both - in the car

Its common that children lock themselves in the car with the keys or wonder off if you are not around. Losing control of the car is a huge possibility if you leave kids alone with the keys in a car. It is extremely dangerous to leave keys in the ignition when children are in the car. Children have opened rear seats and locked themselves in the trunk of the car before, and they will do it again. By having keys visible to the public in your car, your car may be stolen.

Monitor the heat in your car Hot weather does not keep people from leaving children and animals in cars. The heat in cars increase greatly and can threaten the lives of anyone in the car. Avoid hypothermia when it is colder outside by removing every living being from the car when there isn't any driving taking place.

Every car is made from a lot of metal. Driving responsibly is the first step towards safety, but the driver needs to take every eventuality into consideration. Be prepared for every event when driving.
