Grease Gun and Zerk Fittings: Important safety instructions

By Grace Gable

A grease gun is one of the most commonly used appliance for greasing hard to reach areas in machines and equipment. This tool helps prevent the friction between moving parts and comes in air-powered, electric powered or manual varieties. The tool basically implements a cartridge that holds the grease or lubrication fluid and a nozzle along with zerk fittings. Zerks are basically nipple like fittings that help dispense grease from the gun in hard to access areas. Thus, grease gun and zerk fittings are widely used in lubrication of complex machines and tools.

To help make the most out of the grease gun and the zerk fittings, you must ensure keeping the nozzle clean at all times. If, by chance there is dirt or debris in the grease, this can get dispensed at high pressure through the nozzle and can even end up damaging the part you are lubricating. If you feel there is presences of a foreign matter in the grease make sure that you eject it out in a rag. This will keep your bearings safe. Likewise, before attaching the zerk, make sure that you keep it clean and also clean the cartridge when replacing used and empty ones.

Furthermore, you should know exactly how much lubricant the grease gun ejects as well as the capacity the zerk and the bearings can handle. If needed, you can also mark the figures on the bearings to be grease for furture references. All the figures are usually mentioned in the grease gun manual.

Note that every kind of machinery and bearing requires different amounts of grease. The manual of the machine will tell you the exact amount needed. If different technicians are responsible for greasing each time, it is important to leave a written instruction in form of frame markings on the equipment, so that the same quntity of grease is applied each time.If your facility has several kinds of machines using different grease guns, then you may even use color coded markings for ease of use.

It is important to use extreme caution while storing the grease gun. Keep it in a clean and dry place away from moisture. While hanging the grease gun horizontally, make sure that all the pressure from the gun's cylinder has been removed. this will help you prevent serious accidents. Always cover the grease gun's nozzle with a protective cloth or cover to prevent debris from entering the gun.
