Dodge says it will discontinue the Durango after 2016 in support of a redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Durango was initially terminated in 2008, but it returned in 2011.
Too comparable of vehicles
The brand new owner of Chrysler and its subsidiary makes since the bailout is Fiat SpA. The Dodge Durango will be eliminated because it is too comparable to the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This follows right along with the Fiat SpA goals of eliminating redundancies in Chrysler.
Getting a brand new Jeep
Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne told Automobile Magazine this week that the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee will get a fresh platform and maybe a brand new look. He also said the Durango will be put to sleep for the last time.
A V6 or V8 engine will both be available for the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it will come with four- or rear-wheel drive. There will be brand new fuel-conserving technology put to the automobile to be able to comply with increasingly strict gas mileage rules.
According to Torque News:
"These engines will likely utilize some modern induction technology from across the pond which could include Fiat's MultiAir technology or maybe even forced induction, so that these new engines would offer as much improvement in fuel economy as they do in power output."
Fading Avenger
Marchionne points out a change with the Dodge Avenger also. The automobile was launched in 1995 and put down in 2000. Then, in 2008, it was re-introduced with a make-over to change anything in 2011. That revision will not last long because the Avenger will be put down in 2014, according to Automobile Magazine.
Durango earns safety praise
Meanwhile, the doomed Durango has been honored by Emunds.com and Parent's Magazine. It was named one of the "Best Family Cars of 2012." The Durango has earned at least nine other industry honors, including "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Dodge's President and CEO Reid Bigland loves the popular model as well in spite of the decision:
"We are honored that Edmunds.com and Parents have featured the Dodge Durango on this exclusive list. Dodge is committed to providing quality products to our customers that are safe, innovative and family-friendly, while doing so with passionate styling that sets us apart."
That might change, but that is how it is at this time.
