For many years, a battle has been waged for the title of best American muscle coupe. Many contenders have been and gone, but the 2 main stayers and longest rivals would unquestionably be the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Will the 2012 Ford Mustang GT or 2012 Camaro SS take the front this year?
Both these cars have been around since the mid 1960s and have been engaged in a ferocious battle since that point. The year 2012 sees the newest models being released from both manufacturers, with each aiming to improve on previous years.
At the entry level, both manufacturers offer a V6 model aimed at providing a balance between fuel usage and performance while keeping up the muscle automobile appearance. The Mustang has a 3.7L 305hp engine while the Camaro has a 3.6L 323hp engine. The Mustang and the Camaro both provide a choice between the standard 6 speed manual transmission and a 6 speed automatic transmission.
Moving up the line, we next check out the V8 models, the Camaro SS and the Mustang GT. The Mustang GT has a 5.0L engine offering up to 390hp (if employed with premium fuel), and the Camaro SS offers up a 6.2L 426hp engine. Whilst both of these models have more than enough power to get one's self into difficulty, the undeniable fact that the Camaro SS tops the Mustang GT by 36hp cannot be ignored.
How does this extra performance fare when talking about fuel consumption, however? The Mustang GT claims 17mpg in the city and 26mpg on the highway for the instructions and 18mpg in the city and 25mpg on the road for the automated. The Camaro SS publicizes economy rates of 16mpg in the town and 24mpg on the highway across the board. If this is correct it's impossible to debate against more power, for less fuel usage!
At a quick peek, it appears the 2012 Camaro SS is an obvious winner. Why don't you go and take one for a spin and see if the new Camaro is right for you!
