Do I Need An Extended Warranty For My Vehicle?

By Zachary Justice

Whether your car is brand new and just rolling off the lot, or pre-owned, you've probably been offered an extended warranty on it, or have heard about the benefits of extended warranties, and wonder if you really need one.

If the car you are buying us new, it already comes with a warranty. But, unless you plan to trade that car in, or sell it to someone else before the warranty runs out, you may very well want to have an extended warranty on it.

If the car you are buying is pre-owned, or if the warranty has little time or mileage left on it, you might also want to give some thought to buying extended warranty coverage. Even if you have a car that you're planning to sell outright, if it has an extended auto warranty on it, that's added value and a great selling point you can use.

But, just what is an extended warranty? Basically, it's a warranty that starts when the warranty that came with the new car ends. In the case of used cars, some used car dealers offer a warranty that will last anywhere from one month to a year or more.

The extended warranty is activated when the dealer's warranty runs out. If you think you will keep your car after the initial warranty runs out, an extended warranty can be the best decision you ever made.

Consider this: It usually costs anywhere between a few and several hundreds of dollars to buy extended coverage. It sure sounds like a nice chunk of money. But, most cars begin to experience problems once the reach the 80,000 miles mark, and once things start breaking down, you are looking at repairs that could run into hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

It's fair to assume that an extended warranty could pay for itself the first time you have to take care of expensive repairs. An extended auto warranty can be very valuable. Keep in mind, though, that not all warranties may be right for you.

You want to do your research and get one that is going to really benefit you when you need it. Some warranties only cover some repairs and not some others. Some are very comprehensive and cover just about everything under the sun.

You should choose your warranty depending on the type of car you are buying. Some models of car are notorious for having transmissions that go bad, and some typically have engine problems after a while. You should ensure that the warranty you select is fully covering problems that are typical with the model you are buying.

Should you buy and extended car warranty? Not one answer is right or wrong, but as a general thought, it is a good idea to have an extended warranty when the factory warranty runs out. If you will be driving your car past the time when the factory warranty runs out, having extended coverage will give you peace of mind, especially when you think that the warranty will pay for itself when the first expensive repair is needed.
