Children seem to like nothing better than winding you up when you are driving. The often do that by misbehaving in the back of the car. They may just be hungry, bored or tired, and they want to get your attention. It is your responsibility as the driver to ensure that child safety in cars is adhered to and they are safely restrained, so that you can keep your attention on the road.

Having the recommended seats and belts to comply with safety legislation is a good place to start. However, a good dose of common sense can go a long way to maintaining children's safety in cars. You may sometimes see children and pets hanging out of car windows on busy roads that can be an accident waiting to happen. Ensuring that your car windows are closed and locked removes the temptation to try to lean out.

Car door handles is another source of fascination for young children. It is important to ensure that the door locks found on modern vehicles is engaged. If you have adults in that back of the car, it can be a nuisance because the door has to be opened from the outside. However, it is a small price to pay to keep children safe in the back of your car.

Ensure you have the right size of car seat and belt restraints recommended for the child's age and size. Check for yourself that the kid is sitting properly in the chair and that all the restraints are properly secured. Never just accept that the children have secured themselves.

Apart from the mess, it can make in the car. Eating is never a good idea. If you are driving along a busy road and a child starts to choke, you may not be able to safely pull over and stop. The longer it takes to stop the more serious it can be for the child.

Legislation on children's safety in cars varies between countries and states. It is important when traveling with children, you acquaint yourself with the local legislation. If you are hiring a car, you need to advise the rental firm in advance that you will be traveling with children and the types of child seats and restraints you will require.

Always keep in mind that you are traveling with children, and they can quickly become bored and fractious during a long journey. Plan frequent breaks for food and toilet stops allowing them to play and work of some of their excess energy. Find ways to keep them occupied during the journey.
